Continue ReadingAfter attending a Chris Paul (CP3) camp and a John Lucas camp this past summer, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn center Owen Coburn has started to see some mail come in from two big-name college programs.
The 6-foot-10 center has seen some initial interest from Wisconsin, and during his first day in high school he received mail from a prominent ACC school.
“It was my first day of school and it was late in the day, I got called into the office and it was a letter from the assistant coach from North Carolina saying he like how I played at the Chris Paul camp, and he’s going to keep watching me as the years go on,” said Coburn.
Just a freshman, Coburn is excited to have the early interest from the two schools, but says his recruitment is not a priority right now at such a young age.
“I just keep working on my game, I’m not really worried right now about what schools are looking at me yet,” he said. “I just go with the flow of the game, and I’ll start thinking about it as the years go on, but not much right now.”
The up-and-coming center spent his summer playing with the 15U Martin Brothers when he wasn’t attending camps around the country.
“I really worked on my strength and it’s really paid off I think, and then I worked a lot on my ball-handling also,” said Coburn. “I was best at running the floor, rebounding, and hitting open jump shots. I need to work on being more physical down low still.”
The 6-foot-10 center freshman is on the verge of playing his first ever high school game with the Hawks, and says, and will relish the opportunity to play varsity at such a young age.
“I’ll need to mostly be a role player, knock-down some free throws, rebound, and run the floor. I want to become a better leader, and just help my team win,” said Coburn.
“This (varsity as a freshman) is a goal I’ve always wanted, it’s a great honor but I got to keep up, and on a day-in day-out basis I’ve got to keep a high intensity level. But it’s always something I wanted to do and it’s a great privilege to have the honor to do it.”
