Coming off the heels of a strong freshman season with South Hamilton’s varsity – a season in which he started periodically – Marco Balderas is already being noticed by area programs.
“I’ve gotten some camp letters from Briar Cliff, Luther, and the DMACC coach introduced himself to me. Also Ellsworth College has been in contact with me,” said the 5’5 point guard. “That’s it so far.”
He still has plenty of time for his recruitment to materialize, and in the meantime he will continue to develop his game with the Iowa Wolves and the Hawks.
This past spring and summer Balderas was starting point guard with Iowa Wolves’ 15U squad.
“I thought I showed a lot of leadership, and I know I’ll have to do that with my high school team too. And I thought I improved a lot on my jump-shot, that’s what I wanted, I wanted to make it more consistent, because my 3-point percentage wasn’t that good last season. And I’m working on getting to the bucket more,” said Balderas, who characterized his style of play to PHI.
“My strengths would be ball-handling, and I run the court good and look ahead for teammates. I have a pretty good floater I'd say, and I can shoot 3s here-and-there.”
“I’m going to work more on talking and showing ownership. I wouldn’t talk as much last year because I was a freshman and I didn’t really know, but this year I’m starting to take accountability and just be more of a leader.”
After averaging 8 points and 2.3 assists per game last season as a freshman, Balderas – PHI’s 33rd-ranked 2018 – says upping his production will be a main priority.
“This year I’m going to be one of the main scorers,” said Balderas.” I’m going to have to contribute and get to the bucket, and dish-out to our big guys. We could do big things this year I think, we’re really looking forward to it.”
