Last January Franklin point guard Kris Brown moved from Brooklyn to Baltimore to live with his father, and he’s about to start his first ever season of high school basketball as a result.
The talented 6-foot-2 point guard has been playing ball for some time now, but his primary team has been a grassroots team, Brooklyn USA.
Because of his lack of exposure, the skilled passer and ball-handler has not yet seen any interest from college coaches. He has been proactive in trying to gain recognition, and hopes this season at Franklin can generate him the buzz he needs to be seen by recruiters.
“I haven’t seen much recognition from college coaches, I’ve tried contacting some schools like St. John’s University, West Virginia, and University Washington in Seattle. I haven’t heard back from any of them,” said Brown.
“Franklin High School is known for its football, and I just want to bring a winning record for basketball. Recruitment is number one on my list right now for individual goals of mine — I just really want to gain some attention and go to college for free.”
Brown explained to PHM what his style of play is, and where he still needs to see improvement with his game.
“I knew coming into the summer that I had ball-handling skills, but I just wanted to showcase that I’m a pass-first point guard and I can get my teammates involved. Things I need to improve on is my 3-point shooting, I need to be more consistent,” said the 6-foot-2 point guard.
“My strengths other than handling the ball is leading the team, either vocally or with a great play or something. I like to make flashy plays, I’m a flashy type of player, which gets the crowd involved, which also boosts teammates' confidence.”
As he heads into his first and last year with Franklin he says he and his new teammates are working hard and have meshed well. And he’s talked to his new coach about being the team’s primary distributor.
“We’ve been doing early workouts, I’ve been waking up at 4:30 in the morning and then we practice at 5:00 and then go to school. So I’m already real familiar with the team and my teammates and everybody,” said Brown.
“We talked about what’s needed for the team, he wants me to get my teammates involved first. I’m going to score the ball, and he just wants me to know it’s important to get my teammates involved, which later on will lead to me scoring too.”
