NHR recently checked in with Jalan Ousley-Brown as we usually do every couple months. When we asked how things were going, we learned that Jalan is no longer on the Cretin-Derham Hall basketball roster, and that he is looking for a new place to play his final season.
There are some eligibility issues to work through with the transfer, so we may not see Jalan and his trademark dunks for the rest of the year. He has not picked a school yet, although he is visiting one this morning. If that doesn’t work out, he is considering going to a prep school; St. John’s Military Prep (WI) watched him work out this weekend.
“I just want somewhere to play,” Jalan said. “And I think I’m going to junior college, so I am preparing for that.”
Jalan holds an offer from D1 juco Lake Region State, and he’s hearing from Trinidad State, Sheridan (Wy.), NDSCS, St. Jacinto (Tx.) and Odessa (Tx.) as well. As he previously played a forward spot, he is coming into this year focused on becoming more of a true wing. If he can round out his skills (especially his jumper), he could definitely be a scholarship-level prospect.
Update from 6/9/15 by Alex Conover
Jalen Ousley-Brown is one of the most interesting prospects in 2016.
His bounce is unbelievable, and that’s no sensationalism. He stands about 6-2 or 6-3, and the dunks he’s throwing down automatically put him in the top dunkers in the state. Like, in warm-ups, I’ve got my camera just waiting for the next wild JO-B dunk.
And yeah, I know, warm-ups are just that… they’re warm-ups. But in games, he’s reeling off nearly the same kind of stuff. And when he does choose to shoot a jumper, I’m seeing some shooting form that is solid and can be worked with. And the athleticism is certainly there to contribute on defense. He’s a work-in-progress, but the raw talent is evident.
JO-B on the colleges that have inquired: “Minnesota, NDSU, USD, UNI, Winona State (where both his parents went), University Of Sioux Falls, Boise State called sophomore year, Augustana, got a letter from Air Force, Northern State, letter from SDSU.”
Add that to camp invites from Colgate and the Univ. of Charleston. But there’s a lot of factors in play; will he go prep? Juco? All of that is undetermined, and it’s worth following into the school year. Stay tuned, folks.
