In May St. Vincent Pallotti point guard Everette Hammond was starting to hear some initial interest from Division I programs.
Since the summer he’s continued to hear from most of those schools, sans Davidson, and has added some additional interest.
“I added a lot of interest (this summer) from Hofstra, George Mason, Navy, High Point, and a couple more,” said Hammond. “I went to Quinnipiac earlier in the summer, High Point has been talking to my AAU coach, Navy and George Mason coaches and I have had a little communication, and Hofstra said they'd come watch me during my junior season. All the schools said they’d come watch me during my junior season.”
The 6-foot 3 lead guard says his recruitment will be on his mind come after the high school season, but says he’s still out to prove this winter that he’s one of Maryland’s best.
“I’m not going to think about recruitment as much, but I’m going to be thinking about playing the best I can play and pulling out as many wins as we can as a team. I’ll worry about the recruitment when that time comes after the season. But I know that if I play the way I know I can play that my recruitment will keep going up and up,” said Hammond.
“I really just want to have a big season, and I want everyone to know who I am after this season, I just want to stop being a sleeper and let everyone know how good I can be and how hard I’ve been working.”
The Mid-Atlantic Select product said he spent his summer improving on using his size to exploit smaller guards, and to become a more steady shooter.
“My improvement was finishing at the rim and punishing little guards because I’m a big point guard,” said Hammond. “And I think I really shot the ball well, that’s what I really wanted to show coaches was that I’m a consistent shooter. And I think I made good decisions distributing the ball when I got to the hole.”
Hammond added: “I’m going to continue to work on finishing, and my pull-up, it’s gotten a lot better but I just need to keep working on it.”
With a year of varsity under his belt, Hammond says during his junior season — which starts Dec. 4 — the Panthers will be his team to lead.
“I’m going to be asked to run the team,” he said. “They want me to be aggressive and look to create for myself and others, they definitely want me to score and make it easier for myself to score. I’m pretty much going to be playing the one 95 percent of the game, and they pretty much want me to run the show.”

A 6-foot-3 point guard who can defend as well as he can orchestrate an offense, St. Vincent Pallotti 2017 Everette Hammond is ready to make a big splash on the 16U circuit this summer.
His recruitment is luke-warm at the moment, with no offers, but some Division I interest.
Hammond listed DI programs Davidson, Holy Cross, Stony Brook and Quinnipiac as four schools that have inquired about him.
“Most of them call my (grassroots) coach about me, they’ve been checking up on me, stuff like that, and they said that in July they’re going to come see me play,” he said. “I’d probably say they’re all recruiting me about the same, but Davidson was the first school to ask about me.”
Though he’s capable of playing both guard spots, he says he’s primarily a point guard, and should be recruited as such.
“My role was as a combo-guard, but I mostly ran point guard for my team, and it was an overall successful season. I was just an overall playmaker for my team, and I always guarded the other team’s best player — whatever the coach asked me to do, I’d do it,” said Hammond.
“I can see the defense, and I can create mismatches. Also I get into the lane and make smart plays, and can dish off to open teammates or just finish myself.”
The talented sophomore is currently playing his fourth offseason with Mid-Atlantic Select. He’s working hard to get that first offer, and says athleticism and his handles are points of emphasis.
“I’ve been working on my ball-handling because those can never be too tight, and I’ve been working on my pull-up and finishing above the rim,” said Hammond.
“I expect a big summer, I expect us to get very deep in tournaments. I’m hoping to turn a lot of my interest into offers because the first offer is always the hardest to get. So I’m hoping if I get that first one then they’ll start rolling in.”
