Koch did some of everything for his team. In addition to the 18 points a game he also grabbed five rebounds a contest, dished out an average of six assists a game, and recorded 3.5 steals on average. That’s a full night of work.
Clayton has recorded 897 career points so he should be hitting that 1,000th point around game six which should be around New Year’s. Koch is pretty good on the football field too rushing for six scored and 380 yards, catching 38 passes for nearly 900 yards and 13 scores, giving him a grand total of 20 touchdowns this season.
Koch is a college athlete on the court (football was for sure) but that really didn’t set in until he had a strong summer with Minnesota Heat West.
“At first I wasn't sure if I was college ready for basketball and that is what I wanted,” Clayton said. “After the summer I knew that I could play with the best in the state and hold my own because of the time and hard work that I put in to get better and to get to the level of play that I wanted to reach.”
The Ranchers were 14-8 a year ago and expect an improvement this winter.
“Our players now can see that when they put in the work they can step up play at their real potential and that everyone wants to do that to benefit the team and not just themselves.”
So what is the goal of Koch and Harding County? “What's always the number one goal? Winning a state title of course,” said Koch.
Will Clayton play college basketball or football in the future? One of them for sure. At the moment he’s hearing from college football programs but don’t be surprised if some hardwood coaches want him as well.
“Actually it's been all football coaches talking to me right now but I'm sure during basketball there will be a few taking a good look at me,” said Koch.
