We’ve been talking a lot about Strasburg/Zeeland guard Brody Nieuwsma a lot lately and with good reason. The guard is the most talented senior left uncommitted so far. Brody took another visit yesterday to an NSIC program and good things continue to happen for him.
“I was just on a visit to the University of Mary today,” Brody told PHD today. “And Mary has been in contact with me the most recently.
“The visit went very well and I like the campus and the coaching staff.”
The Marauders like Brody as well and that is why he left campus with a scholarship offer to the school. An honor well deserved.
There are a few other programs who also continue to follow Nieuswma.
“Right now I’m trying to get a visit set up with University of Jamestown. Minot State has also been talking to me a lot lately.”
Nieuswsma is starting to think basketball but he doesn’t have much time to think about it because he will is going immediately from the gridiron to the hardwood.
“The off-season has gone really good. Once football over is it was right into basketball and getting workouts in,” said Brody. “We have a lot of returning players back with good experience so we will be ready for the big games.
“We expect to get better every game and get to the state tournament.”
As we documented yesterday, Region 3 is no picnic. There is a lot of talented players and teams in that group so getting through the minefield will be tough. The Clippers do have some advantages though in addition to Brody and the other starters returning.
“We have a great coach with a lot of returning players that aren't selfish, and we play well together as a team.”
August 12th Update
Brody Nieuwsma played his final Grassroots basketball season competing with the North Dakota Phenom. Brody without a doubt showed that NSIC schools should continue to watch his progress while the levels under that should be on him regularly.
That’s not the only reason the Strasburg/Zeeland guard took part regularly in Grassroots spring/summer basketball. The experience overall was exciting.
“I thought it went really good,” Brody explained of his spring/summer with the Phenom. “The season went by fast but it was fun going out and playing against other kids from other states. I think it helped me grow as a person and as a basketball player.
“You create such good friendships with your teammates and it helped me so much on the court with being more patient on offense and knowing when to attack or kick for the right pass or rotate correctly on defense.
“The experience is outstanding. I loved getting around to see other cities like Indianapolis, Vegas, and Ames (Iowa).”
A year ago his high school team won 18 of 25 games so expectations will be even higher. Brody is likely more focused on his football season at the moment, he was an all state level quarterback as a junior. That said, basketball is also a constant on his mind.
“I think we are going to be a tough team if we just execute on both sides of a ball and we are hoping to get to state and make a run at a state championship,” Brody said.
Will it be college hoops or college football? Brody told us what basketball programs are after him.
“Right now I’m trying to get a visit set up with University of Jamestown,” Brody explained. “Minot State has also been talking to me a lot lately.”
Jamestown has been following Brody regularly while Minot State’s interest has increased since July.

After a standout winter point guard Brody Nieuwsma is now leading the North Dakota Phenom into spring and summer play. The Phenom has played in three events and in the last one they put things all together.
“It's been good,” Brody said of Phenom play. “In the first two tournaments we struggled a little. Only had five guys but still had close games that we were capable of winning, we just didn't execute down the stretch in those games.
“This weekend we had nine guys and we played pretty well together. I was really happy with the way we executed when it came to the final of those games.”
Phenom won two games at the buzzer and Brody’s game winning runner as well as his game winning assist helped win the pair. Brody is more focused on the team improvement all around.
“The moments that have stuck out for me is the way we shoot the ball and that we aren't selfish,” said Brody. “We have to rebound and defend better in the upcoming events. We are giving up to many easy points in the paint and open shots.”
The court ID is there and that is what NAIAs are all over him and a couple Northern Sun schools have started to make contact.
“When it comes to the most interested it’s still just mainly NAIA schools that have been talking to me since the last time we talked,” Nieuwsma said.
March 30, 2015 update
Six-foot-1, 175 pound Brody Nieuwsma moved from an all state quarterback/D-back season at Strasburg-Zeeland in the fall, to leading his basketball team to an 18-7 record.
“I feel that this season went well,” Brody stated. “I mean we didn't make it to state but I was still happy with what we accomplished this season.
“The top moments of this season was coming out hot on a 12-0 start, surpassing 1,000 points in my career, and getting a win against a tough Linton team in the district championship.”
Brody’s athletic career never stops as he will be playing Grassroots basketball in less than two weeks
“I'm really excited for (Grassroots) season to kickoff and get underway,” said Nieuwsma. “This year I just want to get better all around with the main focus being on defense.
“This summer I'm back with the same program, North Dakota Phenom.”
Brody is starting to think about college basketball as well.
“I have been receiving mostly NAIA level interest and am hoping to raise my stock this spring and summer,” Brody stated. “Probably the most from University of Jamestown.”
January of 2015 update
The Strasburg/Zeeland Clippers have dealt with little resistance this year. They beat Flasher led by 17 points from junior Brody Nieuwsma. Game two was a 71-34 beat down of Beach High School a day later and Brody scored 18.
Those games were played at the Dakota Shootout in Linton. Two weeks later Niewuwsma and the Clipped traveled to Northern State University and beat Webster Area 69-58 and Brody was an assist short of a triple-double at 22 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds.
The biggest Clipper win of the year was over LLM 53-47 and Nieuwsma had 18 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. The fifth victory in five games was 85-29 over Grant County and Brody had 16 points and eight assists.
“The season is going good so far,” Brody said. “We are starting to get the rhythm and chemistry down pretty good. For us to accomplish goals we need to play Good defense every game and execute our offense. If we can keep doing that every game it could make us be a tough team to beat.”
An undefeated record and an average of 18.2 points per game will get you the looks at the college level. But Brody could play football as well.
“Right now Minot State University,” Brody said about the school showing the most interest. “I'm currently actually getting more looks at for football than basketball. But basketball is my better sport.”
At 6-foot-2, Brody was the second team Class B quarterback on the all state team this year so next fall he will likely have college options in a couple sports.
