After having one of the best sophomore seasons in the state last season, Centerville 2017 Brett Kauzlarich has begun the process of making himself a well-known name in Iowa high school hoops.
Though his recruitment is still in its infancy, the 6-foot-3 shooting guard has seen very initial interest from a select few area programs and one Nebraska Division II school.
“Briar Cliff sent me a questionnaire for basketball, and then I got invited to a Wayne State camp, and William Penn too, but that’s about it,”said Kauzlarich, who says he thinks about his recruitment some.
“I mean I look at it (recruitment) but it doesn’t really impact what I’m trying to do. Obviously basketball is what I’m trying to play, so if an opportunity comes where I can go somewhere that I like, that’d be great. I’m just going to keep trying to improve and get more letters from different schools and be able to play somewhere.”
The talented and versatile wing spent his summer playing with All Iowa Attack, and mentioned the high level of competition made him a better defender.
“I was one of the bigger guys on the team, so I had to guard a lot of guys that were bigger than me, and that was something that really helped me. And also I was playing against quicker guys a lot, and some great competition. So I think my defense really improved a lot,” said Kauzlarich, who defined his playing style to PHI.
“My strengths are getting the ball out on the wing and becoming a mismatch. If I got a guy that's bigger than me I feel like I can take them to the rim. And if I have a smaller guy on me I feel like I can shoot over them if they want to give me the shot, or I can get to the rim on them if they want to come out and guard me.”
With his junior season at Centerville coming quick, Kauzlarich is eager to become the leader of his team.
“I think they’ll ask me to rebound a little more this year, we lost one of our best rebounders so I’ll definitely have to improve that,” he said. “And I'll have to be more of a leader this year, vocally and by my actions, and just make sure guys are ready to go each night out.”
