It’s not always easy being the point guard for an up and coming program, especially when the programs features a high level wing in Xavier Green that is praised for his ability to create with the ball in his hands. Don’t get it twisted, however, senior point guard Andre Brown is as important to the rise of the Williamsburg Christian program as anyone, and he’s excited about the possibilities they have as he gets ready for his senior year.
“Coming into this year we’ve added new pieces to our team who can also score the ball to help out me and Xavier Green,” Brown said. “Before the summer and fall I was more of a scoring point guard because of the lack of depth on our previous team. Now that we have added more players I have relief and the ability to make/create more plays for my teammates.”
Brown, a 5’10 strong point guard with a knock down deep ball, expects to be able to run the show and play more of a true lead guard role this season. He believes that it will be the year he can convince schools that are looking for a point guard that he can be that guy.
“I feel like they’ll be able to see how I can actually run a team and be a true point guard,” Brown says.
Williamsburg Christian brought in an influx of playmaking guards after getting to the VISAA Division 3 semi-finals last season. The additions of juniors Cle’Von Greene from Grafton and Rashawn and Dashawn Cook from Warhill give the Eagles a lot of depth, but Brown understands that at times he’ll have to defer and play off the ball as well.
“My shooting and defense are some of the best attributes to my game,” Brown said. “There will be times where plays are directed for me to come off screens and makes cuts to catch and shoot it, while other times the scoring will be in the flow of the offense which allows me to use my playmaking abilities.”
A First Team All Metro Conference selection last season, Brown has received serious interest from Chowan, Davis & Elkins, Lees McCrae, Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan. He knows that they have an opportunity to have a special season, and a point guard that leads a winning team will see his recruitment grow.
“My goals this year are to have a perfect season record, win our conference and win states. I believe these are all possible for the team that we have this year. We are all competitors and will do anything to win. This year is going to be special.”
Keep an eye on Brown to direct and lead a talented Eagles team on both sides of the basketball. His versatility allows him to contribute in many different ways, but his role as a leader will never change.
