After making a transfer from Waterloo East to Des Moines Hoover, 2017 wing Al Campbell is hoping to see his recruitment ramp-up through the exposure of a bigger city and high-profile basketball school.
Though his recruitment has not yet begun, Campbell says the plan is to start to show what he can do this season, so his recruitment can gain momentum heading into his senior season.
“I haven’t had really any interest to be honest,” said the 6-foot-3 wing. “I think about it though, just getting my name out there going into my senior year. So if I can get my name out there now, coaches can really look at me my senior year.”
Campbell spent his spring and summer playing with All Iowa Attack, and says he worked to improve ball-handling and his jumper more than anything else.
“I needed my ball-control to get up, so I worked on dribbling a lot,” he said. “And also I’m a shaky jump-shooter, people would back off me, so I worked on my jump-shot a lot, so I can make sure teams don’t back off me.”
Campbell added: “I’m more of a slasher, I like to get to the rim and create for my other teammates. And I can knock down an open shot if I need to, but I mostly like to get to the rim.”
“I do still need to work on my outside shot, my shooting. I want to be a knock-down shooter. It’s coming better, I'm shooting about 200-300 shots a day, and I’m really working on my form shooting.”
After making the transfer from Waterloo East to Hoover — where he’ll play for his uncle (Hoover coach) Courtney Henderson — Campbell says his new teammates have embraced him, and he’s hoping for increased opportunities.
“I chose to came to Des Moines because I thought it’d be a better opportunity to showcase my talent in a bigger city and a different environment,” said Campbell. “And my role for the Huskies will be to create and get the ball down to our big-men, and to be an aggressive guard and get to the basket.”
“The guys have really embraced me, we bonded a lot during the summer at camps. We’re meshing really good I think.”
