The advantage to signing with your school early, is that you get all of the distractions out of the way for what should be your most memorable season of your life in your senior year. That’s exactly how John Marshall senior Jeremy Sheppard felt after his signing ceremony on Monday at the school, where he told me what he’s looking forward to this season.
“I want to be Gatorade State Player of the Year and win a state title,” the senior point guard said.
A fierce competitor and leader, it’s no surprise that Sheppard is looking to the highest award in the state for his senior season. With the recruiting process finally over, he looked like he was in midseason form in their scrimmage against Phoebus Tuesday night, where he did a little bit of everything that makes him such an effective point guard. All in all, he was quick to mention how blessed he felt throughout the recruiting process.
“Every thing has been great,” Sheppard said about the ceremony and the process. “It’s been a great experience, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. My teammates and parents have been behind me the whole way making sure I believed this was the school I wanted to go to.”
While UCF came in late, Sheppard ultimately picked them over the likes of UNC Wilmington, Missouri State, Mount St. Mary’s, Miami (Ohio) and George Mason among others. He mentioned that Head Coach Donnie Jones believes that he’ll have an opportunity to contribute early, and the level of basketball and style of play fit the sharp shooting guard perfectly.
“I think it’s a great fit because they run their offense through their guards and they’re a high tempo team,” Sheppard said. “The coaches and I developed a great relationship in a short amount of time, and when I first got there it just felt like home.”
Sheppard leads a stacked Marshall team this year in a tough 3A, as they look to get back to the promise land after a year hiatus. John Marshall will face a young, but talented, Park View team December 5 at Meadowbrook in the ASSIST Tipoff Classic.
