Current Ranking: #3
Previous Ranking: #7
Notes: No prospect raised their stock more from the spring to the summer than 6’1” point guard Saben Lee. The ultra athletic rising junior put his skills and athleticism on display on the July travel circuit with Arizona Power’s 17U Black group while competing against some of the best guards in the country. With his tools there is a chance that Lee could pass fellow Aztec Alex Barcello as the state’s top point guard in the future.
Dre Marin 5’10” PG Apollo
Current Ranking: #11
Previous Ranking: #18
Notes: While Lee raised his stock more than any player in the state, no 2017 prospect had a better summer than Dre Marin. The 5’10” Apollo guard had a string of big performances that led to multiple scholarship offers. The son of a coach, Dre is a poised performer with the ability to make plays and make shots while limiting turnovers.
Dontez Thomas 6’1″ PG Hillcrest Prep
Current Ranking: #13
Previous Ranking: #47 in 2016
Notes: Usually players see a slight bump when they reclassify down. However, their overall projection usually doesn’t change much. However, that is not the case for Thomas. While his reclassification caused a minor rise in his ranking, it was the work that Dontez put in throughout the summer and fall that has allowed for a major rise in his ranking and projection. The 6’1” guard has become much more comfortable at the point guard role as he has developed his skill level far past what it was previously was. He’s got a tight handle, is confident in the open court, handles it well in pressure, and is very good getting to the rim. In addition, he is still a primary defensive candidate.
Keith Holmes 6’2″ SG Desert Ridge
Current Ranking: #15
Previous Ranking: #32
Notes: Holmes had a very successful month of July with D1 Nation. This 6’2” guard emerged as the team’s go to offensive weapon, proving that he has the ability to make big plays in big time moments. Keith is a solid perimeter shooter and is good on the attack but is best scoring from the mid range area. In addition, he defends the perimeter very well.
