Collins adds extra gear; ready to shed “sleeper” label
There's a sleeper PG prospect in the 2016 class that is set to make some noise this season. Freedom (South-Riding) High, a public school nestled away in Loudoun County, about 35 miles west of DC, is home to Zachary Collins.
As a junior, Collins averaged 12.6 ppg as a starter for Freedom Head Coach Justin Powers, including a 26 point effort against Broad Run to close out the season. He finished out his junior campaign on a high note. In each of his last 5 games as a junior, Collins put up double-figure scoring numbers. He discussed his offensive approach.
“I think I'm a scoring point guard,” said Collins. “I feel like my jumpshot is one of the best parts of my game.”
He is a gifted scorer, given the fact that he is so skilled and confident in his jumper. Collins discussed two specific aspects of his game as areas of focus for improvement.
“I am working on my strength and athleticism. I need to add another gear,” said Collins. “I'm also working on the form of my jump shot.”
As a skilled guard who can play off the ball, there are a number of things Collins excels at. He is a savvy guard who understands the game and involves his teammates.
“I like to find people. My drive is becoming one of the better parts of my game,” he said. “I like to defend. Being more athletic has helped me become a better defender.”
Western Carolina, East Tennesse St., King University, and Mt. Olive are among the handful of schools who have expressed interest in Collins' services. Once they see him hit that extra gear, we wouldn't be surprised if he picked up a few offers. Look for Collins to once again be a go-to-guy at Freedom South-Riding in his final campaign.
