Union Ryle point guard Tyrek Owens is starting to be recruited by three Ohio Division III programs.
He has visited one school, Wittenberg, and mentioned it as the program after him the most right now.
“Wittenberg University (OH), Muskingum University (OH) and Mount St. Joseph (OH) are the three schools showing me interest right now. I’ve gotten phone calls and letters from the schools,” said Owens who recently visited Wittenberg, and says it is after him the most right now.
“I visited Wittenberg University about a month ago with a group of guys. It’s a nice campus, and I like the coaching staff. I definitely liked the facilities, it was very nice for a D3 school, and they play up-tempo which is how I like to play.”
While spending his offseason on the grassroots circuit with the Northern Kentucky Legends, Owens says his mid-range shot improved, and his his defense.
“I improved most with my mid-range and pull up jumper this offseason, and then driving and getting to the basket as well as my defensive ability,” said the 6-foot point guard.
“My strength is driving to the basket and dishing out to my teammates. My role with my team is to score a little bit, but mostly driving and getting my shooters open shots. I’ll need to continue improving my outside shot, I’ve been working on that quite a bit lately.”
As he heads into his third year starting with the Raiders, he says he’d like to see his decision-making improve.
“Now that I’m a senior there is going to be a lot more expected of me,” said Owens. “I’ll have to take care of the basketball better, and limit my turnovers. I want to get my assist-to-turnover ratio better, take smarter shots, and be more aggressive.”
