He has been overlooked ever since the first time I saw him at Fab Frosh Camp and each time you watch him the 5’10” guard produces! He scores getting in the lane hitting runners and is a plus pull up jump shooter. Smith works well in the pick and roll game and is a sound distributor. He made a name for himself outside of Illinois on the recruiting trail with his play for Team Rose in July.
“It was a great year for me this summer playing with Team Rose. I felt like I had a great go around this summer and I improved this summer with my all-around game.”
He further expanded on where his game took the most strides.
“I feel like I added a pull up jumper and use of floaters and being more of a leader and taking the game over when it’s needed.”
Smith is back in the lab with his Fenwick running mates for open gyms preparing for the season.
“It is going great. It’s competitive every time we go and it’s good with us building chemistry.”
What’s going on with recruiting?
“Drake and Dartmouth are still talking to me. That’s who’s in contact with me still and I don’t know who’s been calling my coaches.”
He holds offers from Drake, Dartmouth, Wisconsin Green Bay, Loyola, UIC, and Tennessee State. Right now he doesn’t have any visits scheduled. He spoke about what stands out about Drake to him.
“Their coaching staff is a great staff and their facilities are great.”
Dartmouth is the other program that has kept in constant communication.
“They are in the Ivy League and their business program is one of the best. They are an up and coming program.”
He doesn’t have a timetable for when he wants to commit or sign. Academic schools along with mid-major and low-major programs looking for a point guard would be wise to look at Smith!
