“I say I’m taller than 5’10” but, definitely, never going to be the tallest guy out there, so I had to improve on my ball skills,” Ertel said. “I really had to work on it about when I was in middle school and I worked hard on it. I just worked really hard at it and acquired that skill.”
This commitment has led the point guard to becoming one of the best ball handlers in the state. It has also brought the No. 27 prospect on the Prep Hoops Indiana Top 100 notice from college coaches.
During the summer, Ertel began to garner interest from Morehead State, Evansville, Western Illinois, Cornell and Kent State.
Beyond Ertel’s abilities to handle the ball, the coaches have told him they like his shooting and his effort on the floor. Just as Ertel worked to become a one of the best ball handlers, he isn’t satisfied with what he is doing well and looking to keep improving.
“I feel like I need to continue to improve on everything and work on every single aspect of my game,” Ertel said. “Just getting stronger and gaining some weight and working on all my skills to become a better overall player.”
If Ertel does make these improvements, look for a big year from him and his teammates at Mount Vernon (Fortville). Of course, look for Ertel to facilitate it all.
“I just try to have complete control over the ball when I’m out there and I think it helps with everything else,” Ertel said. “We get to places on the floor and it helps me set my teammates up and it just helps everything.”
