Severn School guard Larry Owens has has established himself as one of 2018’s best prospects after a strong freshman campaign, and an impressive summer with Maryland 3D.
The 6-foot-3 guard is equally adept in the classroom as he is on the court, and has seen some interest come in from notable academic programs from east and west.
“I’ve received letters from Harvard, Davidson, and Stanford. And I’ve received calls from UMBC and Loyola, and actually Loyola is coming to see me workout soon,” said Owens.
“Academics is the most important thing to me. As a student-athlete, student comes first and academics is something I really strive in.”
While running with Maryland 3D this spring and summer, the talented guard said improving his handle was something he prioritized.
“I got my handle much better than last year, and I feel like I’m able to play the lead guard spot then I could throughout junior high school, I think that was the biggest improvement throughout AAU season this year,” said Owens, who defined his playing style to PHM.
“Really I consider myself a knock-down shooter, and I’m a pretty good shooter off the dribble. I think I need to improve on slashing a little more, but I can spread the floor, bring the ball up whenever my team needs me to, and knock down open shots when I’m open.”
“I definitely need to get stronger and just finishing around the basket more, those are things I’ll need to improve on.”
After starting last season as a freshman, Owens says it will his team to lead this season and for years to come.
“I had a pretty good season last year, and this year I'll have to be the leader of the team,” says Owens. “And my main goal is for us to make the playoffs and I know that starts with me since I’m the leader now.”
