Chaminade Madonna shooting guard Leandro Allende has yet to receive any offers, but has seen plenty of Division I interest come his way over the past few months.
The 6-foot-6 shooting guard, who also sports a 4.2 GPA off the court, has heard from seven programs of late, two from the Ivy League.
“There’s Princeton, Harvard, Jacksonville, Florida Gulf Coast, Richmond, Bryant University, William & Mary, and that would wrap it up,” said Allende.
“Most of them are face to face, some have come to my school and see me workout. Princeton would be one of the schools that I’ve had the most contact with, and Bryant would be the other one.”
The cerebral guard says academics are of high importance to him and his family.
“Academics is important for my family and me,” said Allende. “Right now I have a 4.2 GPA, so that’s something I take serious off the court, is my study-work.”
This offseason Allende – PHF’s 33rd-ranked 2016 – played with Florida Elite in the spring, and made the switch to Team MOAM during the summer.
“With Team MOAM I was more of a playmaker, they gave me a larger role, with florida Elite I was more of a role guy, every player on that team was really good. I think my ball-handling got a lot better this offseason and I would say my confidence increased in the process,” said Allende, who characterized his style of play to PHF.
“I’m a playmaker, I can shoot it, and the best thing I can do is attack the rim and use my body, but if I’m open I’ll knock-down shots. I think I need to work on my athleticism and get quicker laterally, and more explosive.”
With his senior set to begin in just weeks, Allende says a run to the state tournament is the goal, where he could then showcase himself in front of a bevy of college coaches.
“My role this year will be more of a leadership role, and my expectation this season is to honestly go to state and win state,” said Allende. “My personal goals are to just get more offers. If we do make it to state coaches will be there and they’ll see my game, and hopefully I can pick up some offers.”
