One of the toughest regions at the top last year featured the state champions in George Wythe, and conference foes Hopewell and John Marshall who were two of the top teams in the state. The region gets even more competitive, with two time defending 4A state champs Norcom joining the group. The four of them, along with a few other competitors in both the east and west region, makes the 3A division a competitive one full of next level talent at all levels. Here’s our picks for the 3A Preseason All Region team.
MVP: Maliek White; Senior PG; George Wythe
It’s a tough decision, because the top of the 3A East has as much talent as any other region in the state, but White thrives when put against top competition. The reigning 3A State Player of the Year is coming off a state championship, the first in George Wythe history, and followed it up with a big summer with River City Reign. The tough nosed point guard recently committed to Providence College, and after his backcourt mates Brandon Holly and Maurice Evans graduated, more emphasis was already put on White to carry the load again, and that’s been intensified more since the transfer of 6’8 Richard Sanders to Henrico due to a family tragedy. White’s loyal attitude kept him at Wythe the last few seasons, despite the opportunity to play at bigger schools, and his alpha dog mentality means you shouldn’t count him or Wythe out regardless of the lineup they put on the floor.
