Continue ReadingThe Prime Time Prospects Combine put on by Prep Hoops had 176 players from grades 8-12 competing and showing off their skills. They listened to a couple speakers, they went through agility training (scores will be up soon on the Prep Hoops Network), they were scored on five different basketball skill tests, and then they competed in open runs for the final 90-120 minutes of the event. Most of the talent was from Minnesota but it did include some players from North and South Dakota who are talked about below.
- Wil Johnson (Harrisburg, PG, 2017). An open run with strangers is not the easiest thing to assimilate to but Johnson's leading at point guard was one of the things that stood out yesterday. His body control, pace of play pushing up the floor to hurt the retreating defense but also recognizing when to hold up and run the halfcourt offense, it was something that caught attention of the staff and a few college coaches as well. Johnson stayed disciplined as a lead guard and consistently made sure his team had open looks (which there were many).
- Ethan Freidel (Tea Area, SG, 2017). One of the best shooters in South Dakota came to a new territory and it didn't matter if it was drills or open runs Ethan had onlookers talking about his consistency of stroke. Actually one of the workers pointed him out during one of the drills talking about how his shooting rhythm and composed expression never changed feet set or on the move, bad pass or good pass.
- Dejay Fykstra (SF Christian, SF, 2017). Dejay looks matured in a lot of ways. He looks a bit taller, a lot stronger, and going at the rim his explosive finishes caught us a bit off guard. Fykstra has no problem quickly elevating on the move and throwing down with two hands before most defenders can react. Really like his floor run, Dejay is laterally quick, and a strong rebounder than can play both forward spots. Definitely moving up as a prospect.
- Tyrell Setness (Fargo Davies, PF, 2017). In the open runs he was without a doubt one of the toughest back to the basket players to stop. He was immovable on the block and was able to turn over either shoulder to score and comfortable scoring with either hand on this day. Also loved how he moved the defense with his fakes and then pivoted to a spot to complete the play. We believe he should have an excellent junior year.
- Augustin Reede (Aberdeen Roncalli, SG, 2018). Love his shooting stroke. Loved it. So smooth, good lift, beautiful release, range, gets the shot off quickly, and did a great job in the sprint to the spot catch and hit drill. He came out of his four step sprint into a feet set catch and hit with great rhythm. One of the shooters that we will be watching in the future, has a chance to be amongst the best in his grade if what we saw yesterday is the norm.
- Koln Oppold (SF Christian, SG, 2018). Koln caught our attention in the ways he produced in the open floor. Sprinted hard opposite the ball, caught and hit at the elbow, scored with a sharp cut and catch to hit in transition, made some contested shots, and overall looks like a solid athlete that can be used to defend well on one end and hit shots on the other. A talented team has another young piece.
