Will Moreton put up 14.2 points per game last winter as a 6-foot-5 wing scorer at Edina and his combination of length, skill, and agility has earned him offers from Harding University, Lindenwood University, Minnesota-Crookston, Southwest Minnesota State, and Stonehill College. Visits are next.
“I've currently set up visits with Stonehill College and Bentley University both in Massachusetts,” Will told Northstar Hoops Report. “I'm also visiting Southwest Minnesota State in the next couple of weeks.
“I'd say Stonehill, Maryville University in St. Louis, and SMSU are contacting me the most right now but I hear pretty consistently from the other schools that offered as well.”
Most of those schools saw Will play with the 41-9 Minnesota Fury Wilde squad which Will had a big part in helping to those 41 wins.
“This year I felt like my ability to get to the basketball and finish at the rim improved a lot,” Moreton told NHR.
“That was a big goal of mine during the offseason to become a more explosive player. My (Grassroots) experience was great. Being with Fury for all four years really helped me build special relationships with coaches and players that will last a lifetime.”
Moreton joins leading scorer Walt McGrory (17 plus a game) and junior Jimmy Connell has returning players from last year’s Hornets rotation plus there is a nice young group led by sophomore Anders Nelson.
“I'm feeling good about the season,” Will said. “I think we have a good core group of guards and some nice pieces coming up from younger grades as well.
“The biggest thing we need to be doing this off season is getting stronger. Playing in the Lake is about as physical as high school basketball gets and we need to be ready to go.”
Update from 8/3/15 by Alex Conover
As a 6-foot-6 forward who can run the floor and shoot the ball, Edina/Fury’s Will Moreton blew up with offers in July. Are more on the way?
“Right now I have offers from Harding University, Lindenwood University, UM-Crookston, Southwest MN State, and Stonehill College,” Moreton said. “I've heard recently from Denver University, Elon, Chaminade, Bentley University, Air Force and UC-Santa Barbara.”
As Moreton begins to visit some campuses, he keeps a broad perspective in mind. He focuses on fit and looks beyond just the basketball program.
“D1 or D2 doesn't really matter to me,” Will added. “The biggest thing is going to a school where I could picture myself at even if I didn't play basketball. I've already visited SMSU and Elon before, and I'll probably visit Stonehill and Bentley sometime in August or September. Nothing is totally set, though.
“Both of my visits (to SMSU and Elon, individually) were awesome. The SMSU staff is really nice, and Elon is an amazing campus with great coaches too! Location doesn't matter too much. I do have a lot of family that lives out east, so I'd be comfortable going out there, but I wouldn't say that's a deciding factor.”
With two offers from instate schools and a wide spread of other interest, Moreton’s not worried about location.
“I'm absolutely fine with staying in Minnesota. The NSIC is a really good conference that not a lot of people have an opportunity to play in,” Moreton said.
“As soon as I feel 100% on a school I'll make a decision — but I wouldn't say I'm there yet.”
