Beck, a 6-foot-4 senior at Rock Canyon helped the Jaguars capture the title at the University of Denver team camp in June.
One week later, Beck was in Indianapolis with The Force, helping its 17U squad win the Adidas Invitational gold bracket title.
“It was a great experience winning a national bracket,” Beck said. “The level of competition was great, and it really set the tone for a great July for us.”
After limited playing time as a junior, Beck is eager to take on a larger role at Rock Canyon, which lost its two top scorers in Mitch Lombard and Tyler Garcia.
Beck is a highly intelligent player, whom coach Kent Grams knows he can count on to do all the little things for the Jaguars.
“I really see myself as a defense first guy,” Beck said. “I’ve always been the one that wants to guard the best player on the other team, and I really take pride in shutting that guy down. On offense, my role has always been to come off screens and hit shots and get other people open as well.”
Beck, a high-academic player, has a visit this weekend at the University of Rochester in New York. He has been in contact with other notable academic schools like Vassar College, Case Western Reserve University, Oberlin College, Colby College, Macalester College and Pomona College.
That Beck has a chance to play basketball in college is doubly impressive given that it wasn’t long ago that he really became devoted to the hardwood.
“I’ve always wanted to play a college sport,” Beck said, “and after I blew out my arm playing baseball my sophomore year, I started getting really serious about basketball.”
Now that he’s had a major taste of it, Beck is also serious about winning, something he believes Rock Canyon has a chance to do a lot this season.
“We feel like we are definitely a top team in the state even after graduating two of the best guards in the state,” Beck said. “We feel like we are better than we were last year, and our goal is to get to Boulder.”
