With a name like Prep Hoops Colorado, our focus is clearly on the hardwood. But we are also big proponents of athletes who play multiple sports – and we like to recognize those athletes.
Chris Helbig is the true definition of a two-sport star. He doesn’t just play football and basketball, he is often the best player on the field or court when he plays both sports.
In between playing with Holy Family during June team camps and hitting the grassroots circuit with the Colorado Titans in July, Helbig was also attending summer passing camps across the country.
All the hard work and dedication seems to be paying off. Through just three games as Holy Family’s quarterback, Helbig has throw for an eye-popping 1,432 yards and 17 touchdowns against only two interceptions.
He’s on record pace and seems to only be getting started. Helbig has received Division I attention in both football and basketball and is probably competitive and talented enough to play both at the college level – which would be no small feat in this day and age of specialization. Helbig is a rare two-sport star who we are excited to see on the court once he’s done breaking football records.
We wrote a little bit on Helbig during the DU team camp, when what stood out as much as anything was the feel he had for the game, effortlessly sliding from spot to spot on the court to put himself in the best position to score or create for a teammate. He’s a knockdown shooter and finishes well through contact, the strength gained from playing football easily identifiable on the basketball court.
Helbig is proof positive in today’s year-round hyper-focused climate that you can excel in more than one sport. We hope that coaches are also appreciating what I guy like Chris could bring to a program. He has to be one of the most competitive kids we’ve come across in any sport in Colorado.
