We've identified these prospects as guys who could rise to stardom this season; remember these names.
All-Breakout 2017
Bailey Basala, North Scott, 6’5 SG
After spending his first two high school season’s starring in Illinois, Basala has made the move across the Mississippi and will play within Iowa’s borders this season. Anyone who payed attention to our offseason coverage should know his name by now. But the good-sized sharpshooter will now make his name known on the high school scene. And he is one of eastern Iowa’s finest players; certainly a Division I prospect.
Jal Bijiek, Des Moines North, 6’7 SF
Already with one Division I offer (North Dakota), you could argue Bijiek already had his breakout this offseason with Kingdom Hoops 16U Elite. But he has yet to make his mark in a regular season. Last season he sat out to focus on school, and the season before he played with Promise Academy out of Ames. He will almost certainly wreak havoc this season with the Polar Bears. And should develop into one of high school hoops’ biggest stars.
Drew Maschoff, Ankeny, 6’1 G
As sure as anyone on this list to breakout, Maschoff was tremendous this summer with Kingdom Hoops 16U Elite. He played sparingly last season as sophomore with the Hawks, but will be a superstar this season for a team that will make a lot of noise in 4A. He’s one of the best passers and shooters in the class, and his ability to perform under pressure is innate. Not to be overlooked is his elite handles and his ability to take over any game. Watch out for this budding star.
David Iwowari, Dubuque Wahlert, 6’6 F
An explosive forward, Iwowari showed glimpses of brilliance while coming off the bench for 3A’s state champion last season. This season he will almost certainly start on a Wahlert team that will be heavy favorites to 3-peat as state champions. He had a breakout summer with the Barnstormers, and his extreme length and leaping ability make him one of the best defenders in the state.
Charlie Crowley, Valley, 6’7 PF
Crowley’s game improved greatly while playing with Kingdom Hoops, and he may be the top big-man on a Valley team that will be in everyone’s top-5 when the preseason rankings are released. He did not play varsity last season, and could be the definition of “breakout” this season with the Tigers.
Connor Kasperbauer, Ankeny Centennial, 6’4 G
He was a role player last season on a senior-laden Centennial squad, and with all starters graduating it will be on his shoulders to carry the load over the next two seasons. A rangy sharpshooter, Kasperbauer averaged just 1.7 points per game last season as a sophomore. Look for him to be well into double-figures this season while leading what could be an underrated Jaguars team.
Abe Kinrade, Maquoketa, 6’6 SF
His aggressiveness flourished this season while playing against the nation’s best with the Barnstormers’ 16U squad. A wing with great size, there’s no reason why Kinrade should not be one of 3A’s best players. His numbers should improve greatly from his 5 points and 2.6 rebounds per game last season.
