Coming fresh off a nice July live period in grassroots hoots, Melvin started football camp as a Robbinsdale Cooper WR this week. He managed to sneak a visit to Bowling Green in before the gridiron stuff started.
“I took an unofficial visit to Bowling Green last week,” Newbern said. “That was the only recent one so far. Since live period ended, schools that I've been in contact with are Bowling Green, Morehead State, Nebraska-Omaha, Drake, and Texas Tech. I talked to both Tubby Smith and Joe Esposito, and they both said they're gonna keep an eye on me.”
Melvin said he likes football enough to consider it for college, and as a 6-foot-4 wideout, you have to wonder what could be there. He also joked about the idea of going pro in fishing, and added that “Winona State is a very strong possibility” due to the proximity of the Mississippi.
He also added that MSU-Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul and SMSU have been inviting him to campus. He will try and fit some visits in around football this fall.
“Melvin is a strong and versatile athlete,” his Net Gain coach Al Harris told NHR. “He rebounds very well and is automatic around the basket. He has improved so much with his footwork, ball-handling and perimeter jump shot. He’s an athlete that a coach loves because you never have to worry about him giving his best effort!”
