Editor’s note: This summer we will be profiling a number of candidates who could be named Florida’s next Mr. Basketball before unveiling a power rankings for the award in the fall.
Name: Trent Forrest
School (Record): Chipley (28-4, 1A State Champions)
Position: Combo Guard
2014-15 stats: 29.2 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 5.3 APG, 61% FG, 79 % FT
Why he could win: Forrest dominates every stat, and we expect him to average 30+ per game this year, with Tyrome Sharp graduating. Chipley will be a favorite to make it back to Lakeland, and to win it all, the main reason will be because Forrest is returning. Chipley will rely on Forrest’s ability to get into the lane and cause havoc. Forrest won’t be a go to scorer at the next level at Florida State, he will be a utilityman that can do a bit of everything, which is exactly what he was this summer for the Nike EYBL Champions the Georgia Stars., but at the 1A level, it comes easy to him. His defense has improved a lot as well. The FSU commit can flat out play.
What could stop him: Whether fair or not, Forrest will be discounted a bit because he plays 1A. It’s the way it is. If Forrest averages close to 30 and 10 this year, he will be right in the thick of the Mr. Basketball talks. We’d consider him one of the 3 or 4 favorites for the award thus far. If Chipley was winning the way that they are right now at 1A, at 3A, and Forrest was putting up the same numbers it would have been between Antonio Blakeney and Forrest last year, but Forrest will have to contend with the one downside of playing against smaller, 1A Schools.
