Having a former high major star as a head coach is a big draw to many kids, and Hampton’s very own Stefan Welsh tried his hand at coaching for the first time with his 16U team BWSL We All We Got. Although they weren’t the most talented team, Welsh put together a tough group that worked together and got better every tournament they played in, and finished with over 40 wins on the season. Here’s a recap on BWSL WAWG’s summer.

Top Tournament Finishes: D3 17U Nationals champions; Boo Williams Invitational champions; Phenom CP3 Championship runner up; D1 17U State Tournament final four; Southern Invitational sweet 16
Notable Wins: Spectrum 17U, Team Philly, Kentucky Hoop Dreams, River City Reign B 17U, Team Breakdown, District Basketball Club, Team Winston
MVP: Breyon Gaddy. “He was our MVP all season and averaged double-double for us. He brings a serious toughness and physicality that can’t be coached or taught. He isn’t afraid to lead, and is as dominant as any big man that you will find on the AAU circuit.”
Defensive MVP: Donevan Adkins. “Donevan’s a 6’4 guard with really long arms that disrupts a lot of plays defensively. He has a non-stop motor, and if every kid on my team played as hard as him we would have gone undefeated this season.”
Biggest Surprise: Chris Greene. “I always knew Chris was full of potential, and he’s starting to realize it himself now. He’s a 6’6 athletic guard who has really blossomed from prospect into player this summer.”
Coach’s Take
“I think our camaraderie as a unit separated us from every team we played this summer. We’re not just a basketball team, this is a brotherhood. We see each other four to five times a week during skill workouts and weight room training, not just on weekend for tournaments. We talk everyday in team chats, and we are a real family. That’s what WAWG stands for, We All We Got.”
