Vegas Classic: Fury wins at Rancho again
Playing on the court with Jordan’s logo in the middle of the floor, with spotlights shining down, with Russell Westbrook wandering the sidelines, with the faces of Chris Paul, Blake Grffin, and so many others hanging above the court, the Minnesota Fury went into the Bigfoot Hoops Vegas Classic in bracket play and took out EYBL squad Meanstreets in convincing fashion. The Fury didn’t just win the game, they controlled the contest inside and out, start to finish. A nice win for the Fury and a nice win for Minnesota high school and grassroots basketball.
Fury Rundown
Austin Slater. Rebounding tougher than anybody on the floor. Coming out of scrums with two strong hands on the ball…Finished a dump-off and put back over length…Knocked out a deep trey and on this big stage Austin is looking outstanding…Austin with the hustle play contesting a shot and then saving the ball with a hustle play…Yet another rebound gathering where Austin emerged with the ball and then stretched out for an And1 finish. Battle and skill together…Fantastic pass out of the post to hit a cutting Musoke for a dunk…
Steffon Mitchell. Used a ball screen to make a trey in the type of fashion that makes all the college coaches happy they offered….Late in the half Steffon with a duck-in, seals hard, gets the pass and hits an unstoppable one-hand turnaround attempt late in the half (you would need Manute or Yao to block that)…Starts the second half with a trey as his man took a step back worried about the Mitchell bounce…Meanstreets went with a small on Steffon and it went how you would expect; two quick deep post baskets…Two hand block at the rim and quick turn around outlet was one of the best plays of the game…
Kent Hanson. Attacked baseline to score after displacing his man with a fake opening the baseline for the attack. Such a smart move to create space and then he pounced on it…Two Chicago kids decided not to box-out so Kent bursts through both to recover the board and scored…If forwards don’t make a hit a guy like Kent will destroy you as he gave the Fury four second chance possessions…
Will Moreton. My favorite play from him in this game was his burst through a high double screen to deny a shooter on a set play. Great hustle, position, and toughness getting through the screen…Knocked out a corner trey on a kickout as the entire defense sold out to the attack…
Steffan Musoke: Some of the hardest playing basketball I’ve seen from him and it produced results. Chased down boards on each end ahead of the Chicago EYBL kids…Knocked out a crucial three during the run…Another Fury player that went into the rebounding scrum and emerged with a putback score…Open floor dunk with four minutes to go was crucial…Steffan with another backside cut to produce…
Dalante Peyton. Meanstreets had a guard named Devin Gage that most can not stop from getting middle but Peyton did a nice job of cutting off the angle and using his muscle to deflect the path. Good job limiting the opponent…
