We polled program directors and coaches to get their take on their team's performances up until this point. The section below was submitted by Iowa Intensity 15U coach Chris Hansen.
Record: 10-7
Best tournament finish(es): Champions of the Gym Rats Summer Brawl, 4-1 at the Mississippi River Classic (only loss was in OT to the runner-up)
Team MVP: Brevin Hansen. He has been consistently rock solid pushing the ball up the floor to get easy looks for others and hitting outside shots, in addition to pushing others at practices. If not for injuries, Zaine Leedom would have probably gotten the nod here, as he is such a difference maker with his athleticism, but he has missed close to half of our games. Those two make a strong inside-out combo when both on the floor.
Biggest surprise: Cade Crall. He is new with the team this summer and he meshed in quickly with the group, and brings a little different skill set which we needed.
Best defender: Garrett Sturtz. This has been my go-to player year after year when we need to have someone shutdown. He is very good at on-ball defending, anticipates, and gets his hands on a lot of passes.
Best team moment: My favorite moment of the summer thus far was when Jesse VanWyk scored 20 points in the second half in our win over Tryon Gym at the Gym Rats Summer Brawl. He scored a few times early in the half, and then all of sudden you could see in his play that he knew he couldn’t be stopped.
Evaluation of how your team preformed in the spring: The last two
tournaments were our best finishes and it was no coincidence that it was also the first time we were playing as a full team. In April, we seemed to have injury after injury that slowed us up a bit.
July schedule: Some of these players are playing on our 17U team so we just play July 23-26 Gym Rats Hardwood Classic in Kansas City, MO.
July goals: As a team I would like to see a top 8 finish in KC. A number of these players will be playing varsity basketball this winter so really get their mindset of 100% focus on each offensive and defensive possession, and having them work on their weaknesses or things that make them uncomfortable as a player. I would also like to see Logan Abrahamson heat up from behind the arc, he missed time with an injury, but I think he is full strength now.
