Making a splash: Demetrius Terry (2019) puts on show in pair of weekend wins
Did any player in the state of Ohio see their stock rise over the weekend like Demetrius “Meechie” Terry from St. Edward.
The 6’1” junior guard put on a two-day show as he averaged 25.5 points per game in wins over Benedictine and Shaker Heights.
Video of his tip slam of a missed lay in the win over Benedictine has gone viral and he followed that up with four more dunks in his 26-point effort in a win over Shaker Heights at the Play By Play Classic on Jan. 7.
Terry has also improved his jump shot and looked smooth and confident in nailing several deep shots in the two wins.
Terry’s tip slam in the win over Benedictine was electrifying and announced to the public just how athletic he is.
“Nobody knew I had the hops. I had to show them,” Terry said after the win over Shaker.
Terry said instinct took over on the play.
“I knew he was going to miss it, but honestly I didn’t know I did it. It just happened,” said Terry.
Only Detroit Mercy has shown an interest in Terry to this point, but after performances like this weekend’s expect that to pick up.
“I haven’t had too many guys with his athleticism,” St. Edward coach Eric Flannery said when talking about Terry.
Terry comes off the bench because he brings so much energy, Flannery said, and he credits Terry’s energy with helping the Eagles make a run to the Division I state final four.
“He’s an under the radar D-I kid,” said Flannery.
He also has the intangibles.
“I know he’s our toughest kid,” Flannery said.
Terry missed the beginning of the season with a broken jaw, the result of a teammate’s errant elbow the team’s first practice of the season.
Welcome back Huffman
Grant Huffman (2019), one the best sophomores in the state, returned to action this weekend. Huffman, a 6’4’’ guard, broke his left ankle in St. Ed’s first game of the year, returned on Friday in St. Ed’s win over St. Vincent-St. Mary.
Huffman, who has drawn the interest of Ohio State, West Virginia, and Penn State, said missing games was “terrible” but he used the time to work on his shooting by shooting free throws in a chair and developing his upper body.
“At least it wasn’t at the end of the season for the playoffs when it matters,” said Huffman.
What a weekend
St. Edward went 3-0 over the weekend recording wins over the city’s No. 9, No. 4, and No 5 –ranked teams in Northeast Ohio, according to the Cleveland.com.
