Recruiting Report: Nicholas Schoonover (2018)
Wapakoneta’s 5’9” point guard Nicholas Schoonover (2018) is entering his senior season hopeful to have another strong season while building recruiting interest.
“I think it’d be really cool to make a college basketball team. If I get something, I’d definitely look at it and consider it pretty big. Right now, I don’t have anything,” Schoonover said, when asked about his hopes to play at the next level.
At Lima’s Super Scrimmage two weekends ago, Schoonover’s ability to knock down the open 3-pointer and distribute the basketball was impressive. Even though he’s not on many radars right now, local Division III schools looking for a point guard should check him out.
“I’ve talked to coach [Cornelius] Hester over at Defiance a little bit. And then, I’ve emailed a couple coaches over around Bluffton, Heidelberg, and stuff. But, haven’t heard a whole lot,” Schoonover said.
What is Schoonover looking for at the next level?
“Well, I’m just looking for anything that I can get at this point. But one of the big things I’d want is a coach that will push me. I like to play hard. Everyone has got to want to win. I’m not a big fan of losing, so winning is definitely the key,” Schoonover said.
Winning is also key for Schoonover at the high school level. Wapakoneta finished last season as the #12 team in Division II with him at the point guard spot. He has confidence they can be strong once again despite a couple hurdles.
“We’ve had a couple injuries happen but I think by the time the tournament comes, we should be all together again and solid,” Schoonover said. He specified that a pair of wings, Jace Copeland and Aaron Good will enter the season banged up. Good could be back by game one, but Copeland will likely be out for a more extended period of time.
They begin their season on December 1 with a game at Piqua.
Schoonover’s unselfishness could be an asset at the Division III level in college.
“I’d like to say I’m a decent shooter. If I’m open, I’m going to take my shot. At the same hand, I’m really big on liking to set people up,” Schoonover said.
He has a good feel for the game, as evidenced by his passing ability on the drive.
In order to become a more complete player, Schoonover is working on his defense.
Currently, he carries between a 3.6-3.7 GPA with a score of 23 on the ACT.
