Recruiting Report: Wesley Williams (2018)
While scouts and coaches expect prospects to take certain leaps in their abilities, some prospects develop on a unique trajectory. For example, 6’7” forward Wesley Williams (2018) has taken the most significant steps this summer with Hidden Gems Orange.
Williams didn’t receive looks from colleges with Columbus South last season. Yet, there were a collection of schools with their eyes on him this weekend in Fort Wayne, at the GRBA National Championships.
“Personally contacting me would be Otterbein, and I met with a couple of coaches from Saint Leo,” Williams told Prep Hoops.
“They came to watch a work-out one time, Saint Leo did … probably three weeks or a month ago,” Williams said.
Williams made the connection with Saint Leo, a Division II program in Florida, through his trainer. The budding face-up post prospect also has two training partners/friends who are committed there in the 2017 class in Christian Carter and Jake Montgomery. Although it would be a far distance from home, Williams is willing to attend college in the Sunshine State.
How about Otterbein?
“We had a couple visits there last summer. I like their campus and I like their stadium and stuff like that, their gym.”
He also mentioned that his Hidden Gems team was expected to be watched by West Virginia State and Cincinnati Christian over the weekend.
With his talents just starting to emerge, Williams is in no rush to make a college decision before his senior campaign.
“I’m basically keeping my options completely open. Which ever school is the best fit for me, that’s where I’ll go … Relationships with coaches, that’s a big part of it,” Williams said.
He currently carries a 3.7 GPA and a 25 score on the ACT. Williams plans on majoring in computer science, and clearly takes academics seriously.
As far as on-court talents, the kid can put the ball in the basket. Williams has a soft touch on his jumper and has shown flashes of elusive finishing ability lately.
“[My best strength is] my shooting ability. And being able to deflect shots in the paint and make shots more difficult with my size,” Williams said. He went on to tell us that he’s comfortable defending positions 3-5.
Going forward, Williams is looking to build on the momentum from this summer and add even more to his game. Specifically, he would like to become more explosive in every aspect.
