Fairmont High School is loaded with young talent for the upcoming season. One of these guys is Kellan Bochenek (2019), the Firebirds starting point guard. Kellan and his Fairmont team had a great summer. After winning the West Virginia team camp, the Firebirds tied for first in their annual summer league they host. Kellan is a big reason for their success and gives Fairmont a reason to be excited for the future.
What makes Kellan a great player is his defensive skill and shooting touch. Defensively, he hustles whether it be for loose balls on the floor or just defending an opponent. This makes Kellan one of Fairmont’s top defenders by far. As for his shooting touch, he has great shooting form and can knock down from beyond the arc or midrange. Even with his aggressiveness on the defensive end, Kellan wants to improve on his finishing and aggressiveness at the rim offensively. He possesses great athleticism that allows him to make tough shots in the paint, but playing through contact is something he needs to still improve. Bochenek has great court vision and sees the floor well, which compliments his shooting touch, however his ball handling is another area he wishes to improve.
After averaging 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 assist per game a year ago, Kellan will likely improve these stats while trying to help Fairmont have the best record since he started school there, and to help them go far in the tournament. With the players they have returning, the Firebirds have a very good chance of achieving both goals and Kellan can likely pick up his first offer through the process. Although he has not been offered any scholarships at this time, Kellan has been invited to several college camps where he is hoping to lure the attention of a few of the schools. This young Firebird has a bright future ahead of him, and with his talent level, he can easily be a 2nd Team All-GWOC at the minimum next year.
