Prospect Spotlight: Donnie Shelton (2018)
If you are looking for a talented guard with great speed and hustle, check out Centerville High School and Dayton Metro guard Donnie Shelton (2018). Donnie plays old fashioned, defensive basketball and that is what makes him such a unique guard.
The first thing people notice when they see Donnie on the court is how fast he is, with and without the ball. He runs the floor incredibly well and especially plays well in fast break opportunities. Along with his speed, Donnie is a great defensive player. He is able to defend on the ball and has also been coached well to play help defense. All of these skills are great, but what separates Donnie Shelton from other guards is his intensity and heart he puts into the game. When there is a loose ball, Donnie is the first guy diving on the floor trying to get possession which impresses not only this writer, but other scouts and coaches as well.
Donnie’s goal at Centerville in November is to be a leader for the Elks, and help the younger players on defense. He still wishes to improve on his mid-range jumper, which Centerville will need from Donnie especially this upcoming season. The Elks lost PG Keegan Saben and sharp-shooting wing Sam Lash to graduation. For the Elks to have a chance to compete this next season, they will need someone to step up and fill this void. I believe Donnie has the potential and work ethic to do this.
As of now, Donnie has not received any offers at the collegiate level but will “continue to work hard so when an opportunity presents itself, I will be ready”. Keep an eye on this young guard as he looks to make a difference for the Elks next season.
