Recruiting Report: Mark Janowski (2018)
At 6’8” (with shoes on) and a sweet shooting stroke, Mark Janowski (2018), is an interesting junior stretch-4 prospect, coming out of Lima Central Catholic. Currently Janowski is running with the Northwest Ohio Basketball Club, while also playing tennis for the first time.
Even more importantly, he recently posted an eye-popping 27 score on the ACT. He also carries a 3.5 GPA. These achievements don’t happen by accident. Janowski seems to prioritize academic success, making it an important factor in his eventual college decision.
“I’m looking to do something in the Computer Science major. So, probably will need to have that. I don’t really care the size of the school, or whether it’s private or public. I’d like it to be warm, kind of tired of this cold weather,” Janowski said.
He recently took a visit to Wooster, but is also receiving initial interest from Carnegie Melon.
“I went on a little visit to Wooster two weekends ago, I think. Kind of talking with their coaches. I’ve had a little bit of emailing with some other coaches, just getting my name out there — I think Carnegie Melon is one. But not too much overall,” Janowski said.
Janowski went on to clarify that Wooster has shown more interest than any other school.
Janowski’s flexibility as a true stretch-4 separates him. Meaning, while he is comfortable shooting the deep-ball, he also has the strength and skills to be effective around the basket on both sides of the floor.
“I think I’m pretty versatile. I think I can stretch the floor. I’m pretty confident in my shot … I really haven’t shown off my post game really [this summer]. But I feel like I can post people up and make some hooks,” Janowski said.
During the high school season, Janowski told us he plays more of a major scoring roll than he does with the Northwest Ohio Basketball Club.
“With this summer team, I just try to do all the dirty work, just try to get a lot of offensive rebounds and put it in.”
Considering Janowski’s size (height and frame), skill, and transcript, we’d expect high-academic institutions to be all over him. For example, Carnegie Melon makes a lot of sense. Also, Division II and Division III schools are likely to become more interested over time.
As far as Janowski is concerned, he simply is looking for a place he enjoys. In the meantime, he’s working on stretching, in hopes that added flexibility will allow him to move more fluently.
