Recruiting Report: Lacey Watson (2017)
Lacey Watson is new to both the Columbus and Ohio scene, all though he will be well known after this summer comes to an end. He is a dangerous 6’5 combo guard with incredible vision, playing for the Elite Basketball Club (EBC) AAU organization. He is a transfer from Illinois where Prep Hoops had him ranked at 18. He’s grown three inches and only improved since that ranking came out.
My favorite part about this young man is that he is ready to sit down and play. When asked what the best part of his game was he responded, “I’m ready to go right from the jump.” This is the only way I could describe his performance against All-Ohio Red’s 17U EYBL team. “I think I had a triple double in the first half,” was one of his comments about the game where he lead his team but are up short in a two point loss.
This kid has everything he needs to be a high level guard and he only will get better. He is athletically gifted enough to guard the 1-5 spot on defense and often times is found guarding the other team’s big. His passing ability and vision is steps above almost anyone I have seen on the circuit and his ability to slash by smaller guards and finisher over bigs gives defense fits.
“I try to copy what I see the NBA players do in their workouts because they know how to make it and lately I’ve been watching a lot of Russell Westbrook. I’m in the gym every day trying to get better everywhere because I know I can always improve on something.” This is the attitude that has gotten him good enough to draw two offers from The University of Toledo and Kent St., and also recruited by Nebraska, South Dakota, Green Bay and some other school we did not discuss. I can almost guarantee this kid will pick up a handful of offers by the time this AAU season is over. If you get a chance you need to check this kid out.
