Recruiting Report: David Oliveras (2017)
Great Mills point guard David Oliveras went into his senior season with high expectations. After averaging just under 15 points per game his junior year, Oliveras was expected to take on the entire scoring load this season.
He did that for the the Hornets by averaging 20 points while dishing out four assists and grabbing two rebounds per game. Oliveras posted a season-high 30 points in a win over Patuxent High School February 1. Despite the Hornets finishing 12-11 on the season, Oliveras was named to First-Team All SMAC and helped his team to a couple of big wins.

The 5-11 lefty is extremely quick with the ball. If you notice in the highlights above, Oliveras uses his quickness especially on double crossovers to help free him up for a jumpshot or create a lane to drive and attack the basket. He also facilitates nicely in pick-and-roll situations. His speed allows him to make the big men pay if they hedge too aggressively, as he turns to his crossover to split the defenders. If the big man is sagging on the coverage, he’ll string him out until the match up is switched, where then he can knock down a jumper off the dribble smoothly.
Oliveras had to carry the bulk of the scoring for his team this season, but make no mistake, he knows how to get others involved as well. He recently played in the Crab Ball Classic amongst over a dozen Divison 1 commits and led the game with five assists. Oliveras also finished with eight points and four rebounds.

Oliveras is very in tuned with what his strengths are.
My biggest strengths is my first step and my quickness,” Oliveras told PrepHoops. “With this combination it makes it very hard to guard me. So I can blow by and finish or blow by and dump off or kick out.”
After seeing him perform in the Crab Ball Classic, it was shocking to learn that just one school, Keuka College (NY), has shown consistent interest. However, after participating in the DMV Showcase this past weekend, a few other school started contacting him.
Oliveras talked about what he could bring to a college program:
“I feel like I can bring a fast paced guard who finds the open man and create for others,” Oliveras said. “I can finish through contact, and knock down jump shots from the three and the mid range.”
Off the floor, Oliveras carries a 3.2 cumulative GPA with intentions of majoring in business management. He told PrepHoops that being close or in a city hold importance to him for the simple fact that it will make it easier for him to network as he progresses through his four years.
He will continue to be patient before making his decision final, but even with that in mind, he remains focused on what he wants to improve on as he heads to the next level.
“I want focus on hitting the weight room so I can finish through contact and dunk consistently,” Oliveras said. “I will also work on increasing my range even further.”
