Prospect Spotlight: BJ Patrick (2018)
Sometimes a kid isn’t being recruited for situational reasons. The reality seems to be that the right people just aren’t watching enough Mansfield Senior games. In turn, 6’2” combo guard BJ Patrick (2018) has suffered from a lack of exposure through three years of high school.
However, this summer could serve as a change in fate for Patrick. He will be running alongside plenty of college prospects with Ohio Warrior Pro Bound for the grassroots season.
The partnership came about after a referral from Pickerington Central wing Juan Elmore.
“So, Coach Renny [Tyson] came to my game against Olentangy, because we played Olentangy that Saturday. When he came, I had scored 21 or 22 points in the first half. So Coach Renny called Annette [Moyer], because she runs the program, and said ‘Yeah, we need him,’” Patrick recalls.
“Then they came to my last season game against Lima Senior. And I had like 27 or 28 against Jarius Ward,” Patrick said. (For those unfamiliar, Ward is low D-I to high D-II prospect in the 2017 class.)
The added exposure on the Adidas Circuit is expected to help Patrick a lot. He’s not only going to bring nice penetration skills, he’s also bringing a chip on his shoulder.
“I’m very grateful for this. Finally getting this opportunity … Coming from Mansfield, not being in Columbus or anything like that, you really don’t get those opportunities.”
“I’m so hungry. So hungry. I’m hungry for offers, I’m hungry for everything,” Patrick said.
For those seeing Patrick for the first time, you’ll find a player that scores off the bounce at a high rate.
“I would consider myself more of a slasher. I can shoot a little bit. I like to shoot off the dribble,” Patrick said.
Patrick is a combo guard that happens to play more point. According to him, he’s comfortable guarding the one, two, or three.
The junior would like to be able to spread the floor better with his three-point shot, and also is working on his crossover moves with the left-hand.
Currently, Patrick carries a 2.8 GPA.
