Continue ReadingStanding around 6’7”, Proctorville Fairland’s forward Kollin Van Horn (2018) has nearly every tool to dominate offensively. And he surely does at times. However, Van Horn is rare in the sense that he prides himself on defense.
“Obviously, defense is a big part of my game, for the team,” Van Horn mentioned.
Given his height, Van Horn is asked to protect the rim for Fairland. It’s something he’s awfully effective at. He’s almost mastered the ability to go straight up and down when attempting to block shots.
“Just little small things like that to prevent fouls, in case they need me later in the game. I mean, I can’t risk two fouls in the first quarter or something like that. I always have to go straight up,” Van Horn said.
What’s more is that Van Horn is versatile as a defender. Personally, Van Horn believes he will play the 3 in college. Everyone knows that your position is based off who you can defend, and he has no problems around the perimeter.
“I’ve been all the way out to the point guard. I can defend mostly any spot.”
His offensive game tells a similar story. While Van Horn isn’t a knock-down shooter (yet), it’s something he’ll be working on this summer. Also, ball-handling is an area that he’ll focus on.
As for right this moment, Van Horn attacks the rim.
“Best strength right now, probably around 15-foot and the basket. Like around the basket,” Van Horn said.
The junior has a number of post moves he can go to around the rim.
As for recruitment, Van Horn played it close to the vest during the interview. He only mentioned Marshall University as someone he’s spoken with.
While it seems the Thundering Herd appeal to Van Horn, he’s keeping options open. There are no visits scheduled as of right now.
Van Horn projects as a Division I or Division II player.
For those interested, Fairland is competing in the Athens 1 District of Division III. They’re currently in the District semi-final against Piketon.
During the summer, Van Horn will travel with Tri-State Express.
