“I honestly feel we should win States this year,” Burge said.
Burge, the 54th ranked player in Ohio’s class of 2018, will contribute byway of slashing to the rim. Although he sees himself as a point guard at the next level, Burge will be asked to come off-ball as a junior.
“We have Maurico Tate, so he’s our primary point guard. But I can push the ball, will push the ball at times. Get the rebound, get out and go.”
“[Tate] helps me move my feet, because he’s very quick. Teaches me moves to break down, teaches me how to be composed when bringing the ball up. So there’s a lot of things I can learn from him about being the point guard,” Burge said.
This positional transition is based in preparation for college. When asked, Burge told us that he’s being recruited by a few premier programs.
“I’ve received letters in the mail from Xavier and West Virginia. Every other day I get a letter from them. Youngstown State, Ashland, Cleveland State, mainly those guys,” Burge said.
Burge is hoping to land at a school that plays a fast-paced style, including trapping on the defensive end.
“Strengths are driving to the basket, bully-ball strong finishing, cutting, flashing. I’d still like to sharpen up those things too, keep them up to par,” Burge said.
What else has he been working on?
“I need to sharpen every area. But I’d say weaknesses right now, I need to work on handling the ball … and my shooting, it needs to be more consistent,” Burge said.
It will be interesting to track the Tate-Burge backcourt next season, one of the most dynamic attacks in Northeast Ohio. Burge is joining a team that went 20-6 last season and obviously has high expectations in how they can follow that up.
