When you get your name sketched in to a starting five for a 23-4 Division 1 district championship team, you must grasp that opportunity and show that you deserve to be on the floor with the upperclassmen. Max Martz (2019) of Upper Arlington High School did just that this past season, and proved to be one of the top rising players in the Columbus area.
As a frosh, the 6-foot-5 small forward put up 7.0 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game in the 2015-2016 season, earning himself a spot on 270 Hoop’s top five prospect list for the class of 2019.
Martz possess a skill set that allows him to be a versatile player. He has the ability to score in the post, shoot from beyond the perimeter, find the open man and play lock-down defense on the other side of the floor. Basically, the Upper Arlington product has all the qualities that are needed to be a productive small forward.

Although Martz is already an appealing prospect at an early point in his high school career, he still understands the importance for work ethic to be an elite player.
“I’ve been getting in the gym and taking a lot of shots,” Martz said. “I’ve been working on my one on one skills and trying to develop more moves to get by defenders.”
This spring and summer Martz ran with the Columbus Bears, who played in high caliber tournaments including the Pittsburg Jam Fest organized by Hoop Group. On the AAU circuit Martz average 21.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, playing against some of the top AAU programs in the nation. This type of play was bound to turn heads.
In fact, this spring Martz took an unofficial visit to Ohio University, and has been contacted by Davidson College, Lehigh University and Bucknell University.
“They have just reached out to me and have told me that they are interested in starting a recruiting process with me,” Martz said on his recruiting so far.
Granted, they are preliminary conversations, but with three years of high school basketball left that interest has the possibility of turning into scholarship offers.
Upper Arlington has high expectations this year, and the next, as they will be led by Martz and Ohio State commit Dane Goodwin (2018). With one year of experience under his belt heading into his sophomore season, along with Goodwin and company by his side, Martz and the Golden Bears have the opportunity to make a push in the post-season. Last year, they were knocked out in the regional semi-finals by Gahanna Lincoln 52-40.
Besides the high school season, college coaches will have the chance to see Martz perform at the Prep Hoops Ohio Top 250 Expo at Pickerington North High School. To see more information on the expo click here!
Martz is a prospect that has already established his presence and has a bright future with the amount of potential he has.
