The 2018 prospect from Mariemont High School, who has been running with the Queen City Prophets this summer, will have to add a little more consistency to that jumper, but his academic resume is spotless.
“I have a 4.1 [GPA] for freshman and sophomore combined. And I’m taking two AP classes this upcoming year and an honors class … Academics is definitely a big part of who I am as a basketball player,” Tripp said.
After a strong showing at American University’s camp in June, he has remained in contact with their assistant coach. In August, he will also visit Carnegie Melon and Emory, for their team camps.
When visiting potential colleges, Tripp knows what he’s looking for.
“Definitely academics, that’s always first. And then the campus and the fit, how I feel on the campus.”
Tripp suffered a broken thumb mid-season as a sophomore. Beforehand, he was the third leading scorer on for the Warriors.
He wasn’t able to quite assert himself in the same way upon returning. However, enduring that type of experience as an underclassman only makes for more well-rounded individual going forward.
It’s safe to say he’s completely recovered from the injury hiccup, and is ready to prove himself in a big way over the next couple seasons.
“I’ve been working out. Usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday, with my team, with Mariemont,” Tripp said.
Tripp is going to stretch the floor for a college offense, as the three-point shot translates to all gyms.
His mental prowess is also present on the court, as his off-ball positioning and movement is a strong point.
When he gets rolling, Tripp is deadly. But he’s been working on the lower-body mechanics, in order to add more consistency and versatility to his shooting abilities.
“Consistency is a big part. Kind of my feet and getting my feet ready … In games, I’m more catch and shoot. But in practice, I’ve been working on shoot off the dribble.”
He hopes to also grow as a steady defender and consistent ball-handler.
Going forward, Tripp will likely continue to gain the interest of elite academic institutions. His 4.1 GPA and early start on earning college credits separates him.
Tripp will have the opportunity to showcase his skills for Mariemont, as he will likely play an expanded role as an upperclassman. He’s recently finished up his grassroots season in Orlando with the Queen City Prophets 17U team.
