Recruiting Report: Marcus Cohen (2017)
One of Florida’s best point guards is Sickles 6-foot-3 2017 Marcus Cohen, and though he’s still offer-less, it seems just a matter of time before his first one comes.
Currently Cohen is running with Team Speights for his 17U season, and his already lengthy list of suitors may balloon if he keeps playing like he’s been.
“I picked up a whole bunch of interest this year; Eastern Kentucky is showing interest, Tennessee Tech, Murray State is starting to show a little more interest, Nova Southeastern, Army, Navy, and USF is still showing interest, and also Richmond,” said Cohen, who later mentioned VMI had started showing interest.
“I think Nova Southeastern is really close to offering, they are a high-major D2 and they have a nice facility and they’re in a nice area with a whole bunch of attractions. I like their coaching staff and they keep in touch with me a lot. It’s been a good progression with them.”
When we last spoke with Cohen he mentioned that improving his shot was a priority of his, he worked hard last winter to make his jumper formidable.
“My shot has gotten way better, I have more confidence when shooting the ball. And I still have that mentality that nobody can stop me getting to the basket, and I proved that last weekend when we played Team MOAM and we beat them by 30,” said Cohen.
“Also my defense and my anticipation is getting better, along with finishing through contact. I’m going to continue to develop my jump-shot and better footwork, along with working on combo-moves to get separation.”
After playing with Nike Team Florida last weekend, Cohen is happy to be running with Team Speights for his 17U campaign.
“They take pride in developing kids along with making sure that we get the exposure we need. And also in practice we get a whole bunch of competition, and I like how they let us have freedom to play our own style, but they also make us play together,” said Cohen.
“Our coach says he doesn’t really care as much about winning tournaments, we’re just out here playing for scholarships. So as long as we’re playing together and showcasing our strengths in front of college coaches then we’ll be fine.”
With one last spring and summer to showcase his ability, Cohen is confident in his ability to show college coaches that he can be effective at the next level.
“My goal is to get 5-10 offers. I want people to recognize my game, and that I’ve been slept on for the past couple of years. I’m not an average guard out of Florida, I can play with the top guards in the nation.”
