The talented and athletic combo guard has also grown, to 6-foot-4. And it could be just a matter of weeks before offers start rolling in for Iowa’s 7th-ranked 2017.
“I’m hearing from UNI, South Dakota, Elon, mostly letter and some calls, I might get up for a visit sometime,” said Maschoff who also is seeing interest from Nebraska-Omaha, South Dakota State and Winona State.
“Recruitment is definitely a priority right now, I want to commit before my senior season, that’s what I’m looking for. But I’ll keep my options open and see what happens.”
After a breakout summer last year while playing with Kingdom Hoops 16U Elite, Maschoff came into his junior season with high expectation, and delivered. But he’s most proud of his increased leadership abilities.
“I’ve improved more on being a leader with my team and really getting my teammates involved on defense talking and all that,” said Maschoff. “I’ve become more of a pure shooter, I’m really trying not to miss open shots, I’ve been working on that, and then I’m working on my ball-handling too.”
With tight handles, and an ability to rain in triples, Maschoff — especially at 6-foot-4 — is a versatile guard able to play either position effectively.
“I can be a combo guard, whatever my coach wants me to play I’ll play. If they want me to be point guard, I’ll be point guard, same with shooting guard,” he said.
Now running with Kingdom Hoops 17U Elite — one of the best 17U teams in Iowa, and even the Midwest — Maschoff says the goal is to get scholarships for everyone on the team.
“We can play with anybody, we’ve got so many athletes that can jump out of the building, it’s crazy to play with all of them. We share the ball, and we have good chemistry, it’s so much fun to play,” he said.
“Our goals are just to win tournaments honestly, get everyone involved, get everyone scholarships, and play as a team.”
As for his personal goals, he’s like to limit his turnovers and eliminate that one chink in his armor.
“I’ll be working on turnovers and decision-making,” said Maschoff. “I just need to stay calm and not get too rushed, just keep the ball under my control, not get too fancy.”
