Juwan Staten (Dayton) epitomized the connection. Now they have a powerful link with Tre Baumgardner III, point guard out of Reynoldsburg.
“I played baseball with West Virginia,” said Tre’s father Manning Baumgardner. “I played there from 1985 to 1988.”
Nature and nurture collide to make Tre a surefire mid-major prospect. Baumgardner’s game revolves around on-ball defense, outside shooting, and slashing. He is very technical and composed with the basketball.
Baumgardner III can keep quick guards from penetrating, which is an obvious advantage for his teammates. His defense can deter drive-and-kick offenses from their preferred pathway to success.
Another positive feature of Baumgardner III’s game is his shot selection. He rarely takes ill-advised shots, which reveals a high basketball I.Q. For Africentic High School (13-5), Baumgardner is averaging 5 mpg and 2 ppg behind two senior guards in Houston Smith (Bethune-Cookman ) and Hershey Green.
Waiting his turn the Class of 2018 star continues to improve his skills.
Work Rate
The 6’0” guard gets up over 500 shots a night with his father. The shooting technique the young Baumgardner displayed last summer was exceptional.
Tre and family were able to evaluate West Virginia in the fall.
“We have done unofficial (visits) to West Virginia and Ohio Dominican,” said Mr. Baumgardner. “West Virginia is my alma mater. They were able to go to first day of practice. He got to go to West Virginia practice and tailgate with the basketball team and go to the football game.”
Tre and his AAU teammates were visiting unofficially, as guests of the WVU Athletic Department.
“We went to practice,” said Baumgardner III. “It was real intense. Everybody was real focused. One of the players got in trouble. He did something two times in a row, I think he missed a layup twice. They made him go run on the treadmill for ten minutes.”
Visiting with Tre was Gary Elder. Solon’s Sincere Carry was visiting too.
Head Coach Bob Huggins and staff will be tracking Tre this upcoming AAU season.
Maybe he can carry on the Ohio tradition in Morgantown.
