Mitchell is currently averaging 24.9 points per game while also grabbing 9.3 rebounds a night with three plus steals and three plus assists a contest.
The Sabers have played 20 game so far this year so Mitchell has at least seven games left to play. If he can score 225 points the rest of the way he will become only the 9th player from a Minnesota Class AAAA school to top 2,000 points joining Jake Sullivan, Cory Johnson, Tyus Jones, Dyami Starks, Sam Jacobson, Rick Rickert, Johnny Woodard, and Quinton Hooker (four of those guys are from Duluth East).
Shakopee is a top ten ranked squad right now with a 17-3 record with games against Apple Valley and both Lakeville schools left to play.
“I think the is going good,” Mitchell told NHR today. “We are playing well as a team right now and I think if we want to meet our goal of going back to state we need to play faster and play smarter.”
The Sabers have also received a great year from Booker Coplin and Drew Hanbury and Jake Kutina have done more than outsiders expected.
That said, Mitchell is the core part of the squad and this year he’s been a threat handling, creating, rebounding, and scoring inside and out.
“I have been able to hit more jump shots and I have added more pull up jump shots (to my game),” Mitchell said when talking about what he has added to his game. “And also different ways to finish around the rim.”
Last spring and summer it seemed that Steffon added a new D1 scholarship offer every other day. The list of teams on him was endless and included Central Michigan, Utah State, Wichita State, and so many others.
Mitchell wants to play at the highest level and right now there are three programs on him the most plus a year ago a prep school is another option. So who is Steffon hearing the most from right now?
“Iowa State, Kansas State, Wichita State, and a prep school,” Mitchell explained.
Steffon has recently been to Iowa State for an unofficial visit and had Iowa State at one of his games.
