Continue ReadingLakeville North continues to be one of the top programs in the state of Minnesota. Maybe the most under appreciated program in Class AAAA despite winning a state title two years ago. The Panthers have been to state four years in a row and are the favorites to make it again (although they have to get through Rochester JM again).
Right now the Panthers are 19-3 and John Oxton’s crew is led by junior Nathan Reuvers who is averaging 21 points per game with a season high of 30 at Rochester Century followed by 29 against Wayzata and Prior Lake.
The 6-foot-10 Reuvers is the main scoring option but the Panthers are a fantastic all around team with seniors Cal Pesola, Carter Brooks, Drew Stewart, and Nick Fossey all having quality years and juniors Trevor Schermann, Ethan Igbanugo, and Reid Saarela all playing roles.
“We are playing great as a team right now,” Reuvers told NHR. “Our record shows that at 18-3. Our goal is to not only make the state tournament but compete for the state championship. In order to achieve this we must play tougher than our opponents and become more vocal.”
Reuvers has grown tremendously since the summer. He’s shooting with range and consistency out to the arc, his post game is quality both back to the basket and facing up, and he’s scoring on the move very well. The progressions have been fast and high level.
“I’ve become a much better scorer than I’ve ever been this year,” Nathan said. “Looking back at last year I’ve just put in a lot of work and the game feels a lot easier and slower.
“The main thing I need to do in helping take my team to the next level is consistently scoring and then making extra passes to get my teammates open looks. A lot of teams start to double me in the post so kicking it out gets us wide open looks.”
The Reuvers offer list is long including Creighton, DePaul, Santa Clara, San Diego, Penn, Duquesne, Air Force, and seven others. He is hearing from one group the most.
“Creighton, Clemson, DePaul, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Boston U, and the Ivy League schools contact me the most,” Nathan said.
“Xavier just started calling me this past week. Other schools check in once in a while. I’ve already been to two Gopher games, one Creighton game and one DePaul game this year. I don’t think I’m going to go to anymore games this winter. Getting pretty busy.”
Reuvers was an unofficial guest at Minnesota a couple times this year and the Gophers are a team that is following him closer. Richard Pitino and assistant Ben Johnson have both been to games this season to Reuvers.
“They check in every now and then so I would say medium,” said Reuvers of the Gopher interest. “Obviously they are struggling right now. They’re not even competing in some of their games, but they are a young team.
“It’s hard to think about going to a place that’s losing a lot of games, but they have a bright future with their 2016 recruiting class. I think the Gophers will be much better next year and hopefully win a Big Ten game this year.”
